Haruko Akiyama, 96, of Keaau died Sept. 27 at home. Born in Hilo, she retired as a proprietor for Akiyama Store and an agent for American Mutual Life Insurance Co. She was a member of the Keaau Village Association, Puna Hongwanji Kyodan and Fujinkai, Kurtistown Jodo Mission and the Keaau Senior Citizen Club. Memorial services will be held at the Puna Hongwanji on Wednesday. Visitation at 2 p.m., service at 3:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the Keaau Community Center. Casual attire. No flowers. Survived by sons, Ben (Diana) Akiyama of Hilo and Alvin (Jan) Akiyama of Keaau; daughters, Aileen (Bruce) Yanagihara of Honolulu and Karen (Lenny) Akiyama-Paik of Hilo; brothers, Frank (Mitsuko) Iwashita of California, and Henry Iwashita of Honolulu; sister, Amy (George) Kamiyama of California; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
